The Appalachian Learning Initiative (APPLI, pronounced like "apply") released its Annual Report for Fiscal Year 2024 on April 15th, 2025.
"At the end of each calendar year, I like to take time to reflect on the work that we’ve done and the impacts that we’ve made on the lives of people living in the 13-state, 423-county Appalachian Region," wrote Marcus J. Hopkins, Founder & Executive Director. "During these reflections, I ask myself, 'What is the purpose of this organization? Whom do we serve? Whose lives are we dedicated to improving?'”
Key highlights include:
Expanding APPLI's research to include the Social Determinants of Health and Learning in its educational outreach
Gaining over 1,600 new followers across APPLI's 6 social media channels, garnering over 25,000 impressions and an engagement rate of 21.2%
The creation and release of 56 informational and promotional short-form videos (e.g., Instagram Reels & YouTube Shorts)
The recommendation of 36 books across 5 seasonal reading lists
In addition, APPLI received $9,329.87 in donations from 12 individuals, with expenditures totaling $8,236.09.

"The release of the Fiscal Year 2024 Annual Report comes at a time when our sacred institutions are under attack," stated Hopkins. "From education to healthcare, financial, and social assistance programs, the systems that Appalachian residents have relied upon for generations are being eroded at a time when we can least afford to lose them."
