During our 2022 #GivingTuesday campaign, the Appalachian Learning Initiative (APPLI, pronounced like "apply") announced that we are creating a first-of-its-kind national directory for the Housing Opportunities for Persons with HIV/AIDS (#HOPWA) program—the only federal program specifically created to provide Persons Living with HIV/AIDS (#PLWHA) with financial assistance to afford housing.
We are pleased to announce that we have begun reaching out to federal, state, and jurisdictional HOPWA administrators, grantees, and providers to start building our directory.
This process will be lengthy, and we know we will need the help of our national colleagues and networks to help us circulate this survey to the correct people and organizations.
We firmly believe that this project is important. Over a half-million Americans living with HIV/AIDS are financially eligible to receive assistance from the HOPWA program, but the program is both woefully underfunded and largely unknown to many of those who are eligible.
The HOPWA Directory will include information that is pertinent to PLWHA, potential and current beneficiaries, caseworkers, and administrators alike. Our goal is not to indict HOPWA providers but to work alongside them to find ways we can increase awareness of the program, increase transparency about its operations, and increase accountability to the patients the program is designed to serve.
We hope that our communities will help us to build this directory and look forward to launching in late-2023.
